Long Term Care

The Hotaling Group, a NY Independent Long Term Care Insurance Firm

Long term care coverage provides a variety of services to help the elderly or disabled meet their health and personal care needs over an extended period of time. Care can be provided in the comfort of your own home or at a public facility. The purpose of long term care is to maximize your independence, not to take it away.

This is not just a service for the elderly. Around 40% of those receiving long term care are between the ages 18 and 64. Many factors can increase your chances of needing long term care. They include:

• Age
• Marital status – as single people are at a greater risk of needing paid assistance
• Gender – as women tend to live longer, they have a greater need of assistance
• Lifestyle – poor diet and health can increase your risk of illness and disabling conditions
• Family history – genetics play a role in determining certain aspects of your health, whether good or bad

To qualify for long term care, one must be unable to complete two of the following six Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s):

• Eating
• Bathing
• Dressing
• Toileting
• Transferring from one place to another within your home
• Maintaining continence

Once qualified for LTC care, many services can be provided, which can include, but are not limited to:

• Home health care
• Visitation / companion services – for those who live alone and want to see a friendly face
• Meal programs
• Chore helpers
• Senior centers
• Personal hygiene helpers
• Transportation services
• Assisted living facilities
• Retirement communities
• Nursing homes
